Emergency Exit & Evacuation Signs (ISO 7010)
Emergency and evacuation signs are the green-and-white ISO 7010 "E" safe condition signs that show escape routes, emergency exits and the location of safety and first aid equipment, such as E001/E002 emergency exit, E007 assembly point and E010 defibrillator. In the EU they are used to meet Directive 92/58/EEC; in the UK, the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996.
StoreForSigns sells them in aluminium (indoor/outdoor, made in Italy), rigid PVC and photoluminescent versions that glow after a power cut, in sizes from 120 × 120 mm to 400 × 400 mm. Free delivery across the EU and UK, no minimum order.

What is the difference between E001 and E002?
E001 shows the figure moving left, E002 moving right; the meaning is the same. Choose the version that points the same way as the escape route and add a supplementary direction arrow (ISO 3864-3) when the exit is not directly ahead. Read the full guide: Emergency exit signs E001 vs E002 explained.
Are emergency exit signs mandatory?
Yes, where needed. Directive 92/58/EEC requires employers in the EU to provide safety signs where hazards cannot be avoided or adequately reduced by collective protection or work organisation (Article 3), and escape routes and emergency exits must be signed. In the UK, HSE states that employers must provide safety signs where there is a significant risk that cannot be avoided or controlled in any other way. The exact number and position of signs comes from your fire risk assessment.
Where should evacuation signs be installed?
- Above or beside every emergency exit door.
- At every change of direction along the escape route, so the next sign is always visible.
- At corridor junctions, stairwell entrances and the end of long corridors.
- Directly above or next to the equipment they mark (AED, eyewash, shower, stretcher, telephone).
- At low level or on the floor where smoke could hide high signs — see Emergency Exit Floor Sign.
Which size do I need?
The Italian rule A ≥ L²/2000 (A = sign area in m², L = maximum viewing distance in m) is a practical guide:
| Sign size | Max viewing distance |
|---|---|
| 120 × 120 mm | 5.4 m |
| 160 × 160 mm | 7.2 m |
| 200 × 200 mm | 8.9 m |
| 250 × 250 mm | 11.2 m |
| 400 × 400 mm | 17.9 m |
Which material should I choose?
| Material | Use |
|---|---|
| Aluminium 0.5–1 mm | Indoor and outdoor; made in Italy; screws, rivets or double-sided tape |
| Rigid PVC 1 mm | Indoor; lightweight; made in Poland |
| Photoluminescent aluminium / rigid PVC | Glows in the dark after exposure to light; for escape routes where lighting can fail — see Photoluminescent signs |
FAQ
Do I also need fire safety signs?
Usually yes: fire extinguishers, hose reels and alarm call points are marked with red ISO 7010 F-signs. See Fire Safety Signs.
Can I add "Fire exit" text?
Yes, as a supplementary text panel, but the pictogram must remain: text-only exit signs are not acceptable.
Do you make custom evacuation signs?
