Aluminium vs PVC vs Adhesive Signs: Which Material Should You Choose?
When buying safety signs, the pictogram and colour coding are defined by ISO 7010. What is not standardised is the material — and that choice makes a real difference to how long your signs last, how they look, and how much you spend.
At StoreForSigns, we offer most signs in four materials: aluminium, rigid PVC, self-adhesive vinyl, and photoluminescent (covered in our dedicated guide). This post compares the first three to help you make the right choice.
Aluminium
Best for: Outdoor use, harsh industrial environments, long-term installations.
Aluminium signs are the most durable option. They resist UV exposure, rain, temperature extremes, and most chemicals. A quality aluminium sign will maintain its colours and legibility for 10+ years outdoors without fading or warping.
They are rigid, which means they mount cleanly on walls, posts, fences, and frames without buckling. The premium feel also makes them suitable for professional environments where visual appearance matters — office buildings, public facilities, retail parks.
Drawback: Aluminium signs are heavier and more expensive than PVC or adhesive alternatives. For large-scale indoor installations where dozens of signs are needed, the cost difference adds up.
Typical use cases: Building exteriors, car parks, construction sites, chemical storage areas, outdoor equipment zones.
Rigid PVC
Best for: Indoor use, cost-effective bulk orders, lightweight mounting.
PVC signs are made from rigid plastic sheets — typically 1mm to 3mm thick. They are significantly lighter than aluminium and considerably cheaper, making them the go-to choice for outfitting an entire warehouse, office, or factory floor.
PVC holds up well indoors. It resists moisture, is easy to clean, and maintains print quality for years in a controlled environment. However, it does not handle prolonged UV exposure well — outdoor PVC signs will fade and become brittle within 2-3 years.
Drawback: Not suitable for outdoor use or environments with extreme temperatures. Can warp slightly if mounted in direct heat.
Typical use cases: Warehouses, offices, production floors, corridors, break rooms, indoor storage areas.
Self-Adhesive Vinyl
Best for: Smooth surfaces, machinery labels, space-constrained installations.
Adhesive signs are printed on durable vinyl with a peel-and-stick backing. They mount directly onto smooth surfaces — glass doors, metal panels, machinery housings, switch boxes — without screws, brackets, or drilling.
This makes them ideal for situations where rigid signs are impractical: inside lift cabins, on individual machines, on electrical panels, or anywhere space is tight. They are also the cheapest option per unit.
Drawback: They require a clean, smooth surface to adhere properly. On rough concrete, textured paint, or dusty surfaces, adhesion will be poor. They are also more susceptible to peeling in humid or wet environments and are generally less durable than rigid alternatives.
Typical use cases: Machinery labels, door signs, electrical panel warnings, vehicle signage, temporary or semi-permanent installations.

Our Recommendation
For most buyers, a mixed approach works best. Use aluminium for outdoor and high-traffic areas where longevity matters. Use PVC for the bulk of your indoor signage. Use adhesive for machinery, doors, and space-constrained spots. This gives you the best balance of durability, cost, and practicality.
