L and T Floor Markers: How to Set Out Pallet Bays and Calculate Quantities

Pallet bays are easier to respect when their limits are visible on the floor. L-shaped corner markers mark the corners of a bay; T-shaped markers mark the junction where two bays of the same depth meet and share a boundary. Used together they let you set out a full storage row with a small number of pieces, and to repeat the same layout across a warehouse.

This guide covers floor marking of storage positions indoors. Before choosing the adhesives, define the storage zone, the dimensions you need and the handling movements around the bays.

Choosing the shape and the material

The formats below describe the marker itself, not the pallet bay. The semi-rigid L is a distinct reference: do not assume it shares the properties of the textured range.

Marker Use in the layout Catalogue specification
L corners Corners of an isolated bay, or the outer corners of a row 200 × 200 mm · anti-slip self-adhesive PVC · red, green, yellow, blue · single piece, pack of 4, pack of 10
T markers Junctions between two adjacent bays of the same depth 200 × 300 mm · anti-slip self-adhesive PVC · red, green, yellow, blue · single piece, pack of 4, pack of 10
Semi-rigid L Alternative construction for bay corners 200 × 200 mm · 0.3 mm semi-rigid PVC with protective top laminate · yellow

Keep one range and one colour within the same row. Colour alone does not carry a regulatory meaning here: these are organisational floor markings, not ISO 7010 safety signs. If you use colour to separate goods-in from goods-out or quarantine from released stock, write the convention down and post it in the area — otherwise it stops being understood as soon as the team changes.

Size the bay before you choose the marker

Measure the loaded pallet, including any overhang. Add the space needed to pick up and set down the load with the equipment actually in use — a counterbalance truck needs more room than a pallet truck. Position the markers so they stay visible once the bay is full: a marker hidden under the load does its job only when the bay is empty, which is exactly when nobody needs it.

A marker that is 200 × 200 mm describes the piece, not the position. A Euro pallet at 800 × 1200 mm, with overhang and handling clearance, will occupy considerably more floor than its nominal footprint.

Calculating quantities: worked example for six bays

Six bays of the same depth, in a continuous row, front and rear limits aligned. Each internal division takes one T at the front and one T at the rear. The two ends of the row take an L at each corner.

For n aligned bays in this configuration:

4 L corners + 2 × (n − 1) T markers

Adjacent bays L corners T markers Total pieces
1 4 0 4
2 4 2 6
3 4 4 8
4 4 6 10
5 4 8 12
6 4 10 14

So for six bays: one pack of 4 L corners and one pack of 10 T markers, in the colour you have chosen. Add spares according to how your maintenance is organised.

The result changes with the layout. Six isolated bays, each marked at its four corners, use 24 L corners and no T markers. A staggered layout, bays of different depths, or marking only the front edge will each give a different count. Work from your own plan rather than from the example.

Preparing and applying the markers

The product pages for the textured L and T markers describe use on smooth indoor floors such as sealed concrete, resin, tiles or vinyl. Compatibility also depends on the coating, on how the floor is cleaned and on the traffic it carries, so a trial on a small area is worth the twenty minutes it costs.

1. Validate the layout on site

Lay the markers out without removing the backing. Check the dimensions against a representative loaded pallet and the handling operations that actually happen in that aisle. Verify that the layout preserves the circulation routes and the access to equipment — extinguishers, electrical panels, emergency exits — before anything is stuck down.

2. Check the substrate

The floor must be sound, clean and dry. Look for dusting areas, coatings that are lifting, joints and irregularities. Where you are unsure about a floor or a surface treatment, test one marker and leave it for a few days under normal traffic.

3. Clean, then let it dry

Remove dust, grease and cleaning-product residue with a method compatible with both the floor and the adhesive. Let it dry completely. A surface that is still damp, or that carries a film of product, will not give the adhesive the contact it needs.

4. Align and apply

Use the validated layout to transfer the positions. Peel the backing progressively and apply the marker without touching the adhesive face more than necessary. Press the whole surface evenly, working from the centre outwards, paying particular attention to the edges.

5. Plan the return to service

Respect the application temperature and the delay before loading indicated by the manufacturer. If that information is not available, ask for it before the work: a universal figure cannot be given, because it depends on the adhesive and on the floor.

Maintaining and replacing the markers

Include the markers in the routine checks of the area. Look for lifted edges, wear that reduces visibility, and damage after handling or cleaning. Replace damaged pieces and remove the remains of the old marker before applying the new one — a marker applied over adhesive residue will lift sooner than the first one did.

Frequently asked questions

How many L corners do I need per pallet?

Four L corners mark the four corners of an isolated bay. In a continuous row of bays of the same depth, the shared junctions can be marked with T markers instead, which is why a six-bay row needs 4 L and 10 T rather than 24 L. The number of pieces depends on the layout, not on the number of pallets.

What is the relationship between the marker format and the size of the bay?

None. A 200 × 200 mm L describes the marker itself. The bay must be sized from the load, its overhang and the handling operations planned around it.

What is the difference with continuous traffic lines?

L and T markers identify positions by their corners. They do not, on their own, create a continuous separation between an aisle and a storage zone. Circulation routes and the separation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic are a separate decision, covered by Directive 92/58/EEC and its national transpositions — in Italy D.Lgs. 81/2008, Annex XXV, point 3 on the marking of traffic routes.

How do I check compatibility with forklift traffic?

Check the reference against the traffic you expect. Rolling, wheel pivoting, pallets dragged across the marker and the condition of the floor all create different stresses. The description "anti-slip" refers to the textured surface of the product; no slip-resistance class is stated for these markers.

What about outdoor areas?

This guide and the textured L and T markers described in it are for indoor use. For an outdoor area, choose a reference whose compatibility with the substrate, with moisture and with temperature variation is stated for that use.

Do these markers need to comply with ISO 7010?

No. ISO 7010 covers registered safety signs — warning, mandatory, prohibition, safe condition and fire equipment pictograms. L and T floor markers are organisational markings used for visual management and internal traffic organisation; they carry no registered pictogram and no reference code.

Planning your selection

Note the number of bays, how they are arranged, the type of floor and the traffic. You can then select the L corners and the matching T markers, or browse the full floor safety signs and floor marking range.
